Permian Basin Residual Oil Zone Symposium

APTA & UTPB

An increasing level of attention is being paid to the intervals below the oil/water contacts in many Permian Basin oilfields.  With the general lack of understanding of the full distribution and origins of these residual oil zones (ROZs), The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Melzer Consulting and several participating and sponsoring organizations submitted a proposal and were recently awarded a grant by the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA) to research the origins and distributions of these intervals.

This was evident Thursday, October 22, 2009 by the interest and attendance at the first ROZ Symposium at Midland College’s Advanced Technology Center in Midland, Texas.  We had about 90 people meet, mingle, reminisce and discuss various scientific aspects and anecdotal data relating to this study of residual oil zones.  We have a compilation of regional discussion notes from the day which we hope you will review, comment, clarify or challenge through our interactive bulletin board now under development.

We also have the presentations from Steve Melzer and Dr. Bob Trentham  and other pertinent information in the Abstracts/ Resources section.  More will be added.  We hope you’ll sign in and continue to share your questions, comments, and discoveries, and we will be doing the same!
